ADB aid to reconstruct A-9 highway by Ariyaratne Ganegoda The Government has decided to reconstruct the Kandy-Jaffna A9 route with funds allocated by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Chairman of the Sri Lanka National Construction Contractors Association D. D. Wijemanne said that an estimated sum of Rs 631 million will be required to repair the road which was once a battling ground of the government and LTTE troops. "The ADB has promised to give Rs 181 million for the construction and the rest will be provided by the Government," he said. The agreement for the construction of the 90 mile route will be signed next month in Killinochchi between the Government and the respective contractor after which the construction work will commence within 45 days. Wijemanne said that the reconstruction process which also includes the repair of abandoned bridges on the route could be completed within six months under the guidance of Australian road development experts. All the labour required for the construction process will be obtained from the Northern region and if needed from the Vavuniya, Medawachchiya and Anuradhapura areas. These labourers will be granted a special insurance scheme by the contractor covering accidental death or injuries due to land mines and Jonny mines. "The de-mining of most of the areas on and around the road has facilitated the reconstruction and further monitoring is under way with the aid of foreign experts," he added. |
