'Integration of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 Management Systems' ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) has selected Sri Lanka as one of the eight countries of the region for its new project, "Integration of Environmental and Quality Management Systems in the ESCAP region". It has embarked on this project in pursuit of the promotion of Quality Management and Environment Protection. As the first in a series of activities towards implementation of this project, a two-day national seminar will be held in association with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI), the National Standards Body. The main objectives of the project are: i) To develop appropriate training mechanisms for the integration of Environmental and Quality Management Systems: ii) To facilitate ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 implementation in SMEs in a joint and thus cost-and time-effective manner; and iii) To suggest guidelines in achieving simultaneous third-party certification for ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. Installation of an EMS as per ISO 14001 in an organisation where already there is a Quality Management System as per ISO 9000 will be very much easy as many aspects such as Document Control, Training and Internal Audit are similar. There are more than 250 organisations already having ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems installed and therefore, those who are conversant with the ISO 9000 QMS, will find it beneficial to follow this seminar for successful installation of ISO 14000. Those organisations that have already installed an EMS conforming to ISO 14001 would be able to get the finer points sorted out by training their staff for the integration of their systems into the ISO 9000 QMS. The seminar will be conducted by Sohrab, an UN-ESCAP Consultant on ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 at the Trans Asia Hotel on December 2 and 3. Sohrab is an IRCA Lead Auditor and is also an International Consultant in Quality Management and Standardisation. |
