Sri Lanka women cricketers in training Sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan women cricketers will leave for Barbados, West Indies for a six One-Day Internationals in early March 2003. This series will give more international exposure to the local girls who performed remarkably at both World Cups of 1997 and 2000. The matches will be played in St. Vincent where women's cricket is very popular and bound to draw attention. While this will be a muscle flexer for Sri Lanka, the West Indies will have to sweat it out for good performance before they leave for Netherlands in July 2003 to play in the Mini World Cup. Here, all the countries of the International Women's Cricket Council who failed to emerge into the top eight finalists at the last World Cup will vie with each other for the bottom two slots. Sri Lanka is a finalist and is expected to perform well. The Women's World Cup is played under the same rules and conditions as the Men's World Cup, set by the ICC. Incidentally, the men's WC is also played in South Africa. The sixteen member squad will have fourteen players along with coach, Nihal Kodituwakku and chef-de-mission, Mrs. C. Munaweera. A twenty eight member pool was named for the tour from which fourteen girls will be picked after their performances at trial matches beginning 2nd January 2003. Most of the players of the WC 2000 are retained in the pool for the WI tour but according to Gwen Herat, President, WCASL, there will be new blood introduced for the World Cup and many are in the pool.
