Three schoolboys in Sri Lanka sevens team

Three schoolboy ruggerites have been included in the Sri Lanka Rugby sevens squad for the Dubai International Rugby sevens which will be worked off in Al Awir rugby grounds, Dubai from December 5 to 7, 2002.

Vidyartha's Danushka Pushpakumara (who represented Sri Lanka at the commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens competition in Manchester, England) has been picked once again while Isipathana's winger Dinesh Kumara and Antonian Centre Hiran Liyanage will don the Sri Lanka Jersey for the first time in Dubai. The only other newcomer is CR and FC centre Dilan Abeygunawardena.

Four players who took part in last year's Dubai Sevens - Nalaka Weerakkody, Radhika Hettiarachchi, Nishantha Jayasuriya and Sithara Fernando will be seen in action in Dubai once again.

Last year Sri Lanka led by Sanjeeva Jayasinghe went down fighting to wales by 12-24 in the Bowl semi-finals having overcome Kenya 31-12 in the quarter-finals. In the preliminary round Sri Lanka were beaten by Scotland (31-0), New Zealand (77-5) and Portugal (28-14).

The Sri Lanka Sevens squad:

Radhika Hettiarachchi, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Nalaka weerakkody, Sajith Mallikarachchi, (all from Kandy SC), Sithara Fernando and Nishantha Jayasuriya (both from Army), Leonard de Zilwa and Lakala Perera (both from Havelocks), Dilan Abeygunawardena (CR and FC), Danushka Pushpakumara (Vidyartha), Dinesh Kumara (Isipatana), Hiran Liyanage (St. Anthony's, Katugastota).

Officials: Asanga Seneviratne (coach), Chaminda Rupasinghe (Manager).
