Members of the Maritime Officers Trade Union of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has threatened to go on strike from Tuesday (26) if the authorities fail to grant their long overdue promotions and salary increments. Indral Goonerathne, the President of the union told the Daily News yesterday that there were five categories of Maritime officers namely Assistant tug masters, Tug masters, Berdger masters, Fire float dredger officers and Engineering officers whose promotions are overdue. Explaining the grounds for their proposed strike, Goonerathne said from 1999 they have been discussing with the management regarding the upgrading and the salary increments of the five categories. "The promotions of the officers were on hold for over a long period and the officers have been stagnating and they have reached the end of their salary scale." "We will go on striking till our demands are met", Goonerathne said. "We have given the authorities the legally stipulated 21 days notice prior to striking". "From 1999 we were having discussions with the management but their responses were half hearted," he said. The trade union action of the Maritime officers may paralyse the entire economy of the country. We hope the management and the authorities will understand the severity of the situation and will heed our demands," he added. (RS) |
