High ranking Russian police team here

A high ranking Police delegation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia now on a tour of Sri Lanka called on the Minister of Interior John Amaratunga at the Ministry of Interior today (21st November). They were accompanied by the Russian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mr. Mikhail G. Khrpov.

The ten-member delegation comprises Deputy Inspector Generals of Police handling various branches of Police work in Russia. They are here to study the methods of handling anti-terrorist activities, violence and civil commotion, protecting Government institutions and installations and exchange views and experiences in handling such situations.

The team headed by Alexander Kudryashov, DIG comprises Alexey Mikulenko, DIG Mikhail Vasiliev, DIG Alexander Gavrolov, DIG Vasily Komarov, DIG Yury Dashevskiy SSP, Andrei Purkoudine DIG Boris Lozovski DIG, Valdmir Vassiliev, DIG Victor Gavritichkov DIG.

It was revealed at the discussion that some of the DIGs had a hand in the rescue of hostages in the recent hostage drama in Russia.

The team's head said that they have met the Inspector-General of Police T.E. 'Anandarajah and also Visited the Police Higher Training Institute and hope to deliver a series of lectures to high ranking local police personnel.

The delegation informed the Minister that Russia was prepared to train Sri Lankan Police personnel in combating tense situations and terrorist activities using modern methods and equipment.

Minister John Amaratunga thanked the delegation for the offer and said there was much Sri Lanka could learn from such exchange of views and experiences.

Lal Ratnayake, former DIG and Private Secretary to the Minister also participated at the discussion.
