Boost for livestock and dairy farming projects

by Sigiriya group correspondent

Livestock and dairy farming project has been started by the Yattawatta Divisional Agrarian Services Centre.

Mrs. Nirosha Wimalasena, the Livestock and Dairy Farming Demonstrator said this has been done after a research done in the area. Some 150 families in the area around Yattawatta (in the Matale district) engaged in this work but with little success owing to marketing difficulties. Further there had been no innovation other than collecting some milk and eggs and having them sold. Their income was meagre and survival with an uncertain economic conditions.

Studying their grave economic plight the Agrarian Services Centre and Yattawatta under the instruction of Divisional Medical Health Officer Dr. K. M. S. Jayatissa. Vet. Surgeon K. G. Perera and Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman K. G. Somasiri are involved in making up the project which handles daily collecting of milk and making weekly payments to the farmers.

Chicken and eggs are collected at centres and outlets with instant payments. The project has also started making ice-cream, yoghurt, ghee and toffees under strict sanitary conditions. They have become very popular in the area, says Mrs. N. Wimalasena. K. G. Somasiri, the Chairman of Yattawatta Pradeshiya Sabha said loan facilities too are arranged in consultation with the BoC and People's Bank for further financial assistance if the participants need to make their work more solid.
