Total Cabinet approval has been obtained to the two Cabinet Memoranda, one proposing the establishment of an All Party Select Committee and the other to create the post of Commissioner of Appeals to solve many problems in the field of education, states a media communique by the Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry. According to Education Minister, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, the first of the proposals is intended to curb down the developing trend of violence in the university system in addition to considering alternatives to the current Z-Score method of selecting university admissions. The latter will be concerned with school problems such as congestions in schools and also the review of admissions to popular schools, a subject formerly handled by Boards of Appeal, stated the Minister. The Minister further said that A. M. R. B. Amarakoon, the former Commissioner of Examinations, is due to be appointed as the Commissioner of Appeals, in the course of next week. |
