US keen on Lanka's infrastructure development - Huntsman

Deputy US Trade Representative Jon Huntsman said yesterday that he believes there will be plenty of opportunities for the US private sector get involved in the handling of Sri Lanka's infrastructure development and especially in Information Technology.

The US is the best in the world for capital components and we engage in the development of services sectors such as banking, trade, finance and insurance, he told a news conference at the US Embassy in Colombo yesterday.

"The Government should set up a framework and a safe haven of transparency as business confidence is growing among Americans in the backdrop of the peace process," he said. "The United States will be watching Sri Lanka very closely at the Oslo parley.

That is the reason for sending a representative of the highest calibre like Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to Oslo," US Ambassador Ashley Wills said.

He said he had a wide range of discussions with Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake on the US commitment to the implementation of the TIFA.

He also met President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga where he discussed trade and investment in the context of ensuring lasting peace.

TIFA does not have a time frame for itwo countries. (RL)
