NWS & DB takes over Kundasale water supply scheme distribution

The National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWS & DB) has taken over the distribution system of Kundasale water supply scheme, which was under the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha.

The Board has informed consumers in Kundasale area that in future giving new water connections, billing and collection activities, water quality analysis monitoring work, repairs and maintenance will be attended by the Board.

The Board has also informed that it has to spend a large amount of money to give new water connections and for rehabilitation work to improve water supply system. In addition, it spends money to use chemicals to purify water before distribution.

The Board's Deputy General Manager states that the Board's utmost intention is to give the best possible service to consumers and requests consumers to direct their water problems to officer-in-charge, Kundasale Water Supply Scheme, Gam Udawa, Pallekele.

Repairs after eight years

The Horana clock tower which had been out of order for more than eight years has been renovated by the Horana Urban Council at a cost of Rs. 55,000.

Rs. 43,000 to renovate the clock tower was donated by Horana Orchid Enterprises and the balance Rs. 12,000 by the Horana Urban Council, said Mayor Somasiri Gamage.

12 jay-walkers fined

Twelve jay-walkers were fined by Kandy Primary Court Judge Thamara Tennekoon when they pleaded guilty to cases filed by the Kandy Traffic police.

Fourteen persons were charged under Special Gazette Notification 444/18 of 1987 with disregarding traffic rules at the main round-about near the clock tower in Kandy.

All accused pleaded guilty and 12 were fined Rs. 250 each. Two students were severely warned and discharged.

Kandy traffic police filed the plaints and told court that 17 jay-walkers had failed to appear and moved that warrants be issued against them.

The judge issued warrants on 17 absent jay-walkers and put off the cases for January 20.

Reckless driver gets two years RI

A private bus driver responsible of killing a 17-year-old boy by driving a coach recklessly, was sentenced to two years' rigorous imprisonment by Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Maxwell Paranagama.

Palliyaguruge Upali Perera, 27, of Pohoddaramulla was indicted by the Attorney General with causing the death of M. Sujeewa Priyanthi Silva of Moratuwa by driving a private coach negligently and recklessly along the Galle Road on January 27, 1998.

State Counsel Deelan Ratnayake prosecuted.

Beli, delum plantation drive

An islandwide programme to plant beli and delum saplings was decided at a meeting at the Ayurveda Research Institute, Navinna on Thursday.

The Ayurveda Department will plant 10,000 beli saplings and 2,000 delum saplings as an initial step at the Sinhala and Tamil New Year next year, said senior ayurveda scientists Dr. Gunaratna de Silva, Head of the Botanical Division of the Ayruveda Research Institute.

The Commissioner of Ayurveda Asoka Malimage requested the public to supply many seeds and saplings of beli, delum and other varieties of medicinal plants to the Seed and Plant Bank of the Botanical Research Branch of Ayurveda at Navinna.

Purse seine net fishermen in custody

A police party led by Sub Inspectors A. S. Alutgedera and Yapa took into custody 42 fishermen with eight boats and eight prohibited purse seine nets while engaged in fishing in the Kuchchaweli, Nilaveli and Challi areas north of Trincomalee.

Police inquiries have disclosed that the suspects were employed by fish dealers who own the nets and boats.

Further inquiries are proceeding on the direction of the Headquarters Inspector Nissanka Dassanayaka.
