by Uditha Kumarasinghe Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse on Friday met artists to discuss the formulation of a National Policy to overcome their problems. Nearly 168 artists representing various disciplines of art met the Opposition Leader and expressed their views on key problems encountered by them in their respective fields, a spokesman for the Opposition Leader's Office told the Daily News yesterday. The artists pointed out that so far they had been used by politicians to gain power without giving permanent solutions to their burning issues. They said they participated at this meeting as they have confidence in the Opposition Leader who moves closely with artists irrespective of their political affiliations. Rajapakse proposed to prepare a National Policy in order to provide immediate solutions to the problems of artists. All artists who attended the discussion unanimously adopted this proposal. Initiatives were also taken to set up committees for each field of art including cinema, teledrama, music and literary sectors. The spokesman said the establishment of committees will finally formulate a Common Programme which would benefit both the artists and the country by preserving the culture. |
