The Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements (CITYNET) is a network of major Local Government Institutions and other institutions of similar interests in the Asia Pacific Region, and serves as a focal point and a facilitator of capacity building, partnership development, access for information and also for networking. The Colombo Municipal Council has been a founder member of this organisation and the Municipal Councils of Kandy, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia and Negombo, are also current members. Several other organisations too in Sri Lanka hold associate memberships. The Colombo Municipal Council with the association of several other institutions has sponsored the 17th Executive Committee Meeting on November 18 and 19 and also the Regional Workshop on Urban Tourism and Poverty Reduction between November 20 and 22. It is forecast that 61 per cent of the world's population in 2030 will live in megacities (population over ten million) and also that 16 of the world's largest urban areas will be in Asia. In this context the Cities will play a very vital role in national development in the years to come. The bilateral agencies such as Citynet will hence have a very significant contribution in information sharing which necessarily will have to precede. The theme for the discussion at the Workshop that will follow the Executive meeting will address two main aspects concerning cities namely Poverty and Tourism. Many countries in the region has tourism at a very high level in the development agenda. The Executive Committee meeting and the Workshop to follow is expected to generate many a valuable links among he participants. |
