Niyas, Hambantota special correspondent The Ministry of Rural Economy which was created with the intention of enhancing the rural economy, had embarked on several large scale projects in the Southern region, during the past 11 months, the Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardana said. He said so addressing a gathering just after laying the foundation stone for a sales centre at Mayurapura, Hambantota on November 10. We have started to construct an economic trade centre at Embilipitiya with the sole intention of protecting the farmers from falling prey to the middle men. The recent trends of killings in the Jayawardhanapura University and killing of Walallawita PS Chairman made us recall the era of terror in the 80s. We cannot allow the country to fall into the era of inhumanity again, the need of the hour is humanitarian politics, Minister Gunawardana emphasised. Deputy Minister of Health Sajith Premadasa said that his late father initiated a program to develop 15,000 villages throughout the island to help the downtrodden masses in the country, the Deputy Minister said.
