Matara Central correspondent A case of committing rape after administration of anaesthesia by a doctor in a distant place came under fire at the October monthly meeting of the Matara, Municipal Council held at the Council Chamber. Mayor Nimal de Silva who presided over the meeting cast critical remarks in that respect when an occurrence of unfortunate death of a carter after admission to Matara General Hospital who had met with an accident at Pamburana, Matara was reported due to the negligence of the Matara General Hospital authorities. This was spotlighted by MMC S. M. W. Upul Nishantha (PA), former Chairman of the Matara Urban Council. In disclosing the circumstances under which the carter died MMC Nishantha said, the victim was admitted to the Matara hospital at 3.00 p.m. on the day in question, but an immediate operation needed by him was done only at 12.00 midnight. The surgeon who attended on the patient was amazed at the delay on the part of certain officers in arranging the immediate operation needed on the patient. The MMC added that it is the general opinion of the public that it is better to admit a patient direct into a funeral parlour rather than to Matara General Hospital for treatment. MMC P. Vinodahewa (UNP) said though 116 resolutions have been pushed through since the present administration came into power, not a single of them have been given effect so far. Opposition leader Chandrasiri Gajadheera, MMC (PA), Jagath Nallaperuma (UNP), Jaliya Jayawardhane (UNP) and Sosindra Hadunge (PA) also spoke. |
