Computer technology no more a fairy tale: Official

Computer technology is no more a fairy tale but will limit the volume of files, papers, shelves and classrooms of the present size, said Professor V. K. Samaranayake, Director of the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).

Speaking at the inaugural programme of a special computer programme to working journalists, he said information from the government could be obtained seven days of the week, 24 hours and questions too could be raised through the computer.

It may be levelled at any high-ranking officer through the computer under the eGovernance initiative. In America, the President's messages come through the computer and you are allowed to ask your question.

The computer will answer promptly or else the time will be given when the question will be answered. The only difference is that the background of the reply will depict the White House fountain. If it is lighted, then it is night, but the answer will be divulged at any time, he said at the function at the UCSC Auditorium.

Two separate sessions were held in Sinhala and the English attended by working journalists. This was a new opening for journalists of printed media, electronic media, aesthetic associations of films, music, photography and poets.

S. T. Nandasara, M. J. P. U. Samantilaka, Harsha Wijewardena and Dr. A. P. Madurapperuma delivered lectures.

Prof. Samaranayake contacted Dr. Ruwan Weerasinghe, a staff member doing research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of USA via the Internet at 2400 USA time.

He is researching the introduction of Sinhala language to computer applications adding Sinhala to the set of over 270 languages used with computers all over the world.

Nandasara demonstrated a digital camera where Sri Lankan journalists were shown the power of the digital technology which they could not experience even during visits out side the country.
