Peradeniya special correspondent

Girls' High School, Kandy has its own traditions that go back to 123 years, said Principal Rupa Amarasinghe said.

Speaking at the school's 123rd prize giving held at the school hall, she said Girls' High School is not just another school amidst many.

"It is a school that proudly acclaims to its own individuality, own customs and own traditions that goes back to 123 years. An educational institution such as Girls' High School has a great contribution to make towards the nation's endeavours to build a just and righteous society. Our aim is not merely to mass produce a group of individuals of high intelligentsia but mould young women of high intelligence bestowed with humane sensitivity," she said.

Referring to academic achievements, she said at the O/L examination in 2001, out of 259 students 258 qualified in the Sinhala medium for the Advanced Level while 79 students obtained eight A's.

In the Tamil medium, 46 students out of 47 qualified for the Advanced Level and one student got eight A's, Amarasinghe said.

Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku was the chief guest.
