by Kurunegala North group correspondent The phase three of the Kurunegala New Town Development Project has commenced on the instructions of Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jayawickrema Perera. For the successful implementation of this massive development project an additional sum of Rupees 60 million has been granted to the Municipal Council Kurunegala by the Asian Development Bank. The Kurunegala New Town Development Project was initiated by the former PA Government on the request of S. B. Nawinna then Chief Minister NWPC with Asian Development Bank funding to the tune of Rs. 60 million. Under the projects third phase, the renovation and reconstruction of the central bus stand has commenced. the construction and renovation of the Kurunegala, Puttalam, Dambulla, Colombo and Chilaw main roads have been successfully completed. In the Kurunegala town Mihindu Mawatha, Holy Family Balika Mawatha, Rajapeela Mawatha Perakumba Veediya, D. B. Welagedara Veediya and Wathimi Mawatha work has been completed. The total drain network of the town is completed and the renovation of the Bu Ela project is under construction. Under the phase three of this project overhead bridge will be constructed at every school, in the town, so as to enable the schoolchildren to get to the Central bus stand and to the respective schools without any difficulty. Underground roads will also be constructed to connect the Central bus stand from the Clock Tower junction so as to ease traffic congestion. A mini Railway station will function from the town to connect the main northern railway at Kurunegala station which will help train passengers. Two alternative new roads will also be constructed to connect the main Kandy and Colombo road via Muttetugala and Gettuwane through Udawalpola which will also ease traffic congestion during peak hours. Kurunegala Mayor Nimal Chandrasiri de Silva commenting on the project told the media that the four storeyed multi-shopping super complex would be handed over to the public in January 2003 and under the project a special shopping complex would be built for the pavement hawkers. He also said that the drinking water problem for the Kurunegala town population has already been solved as a result of the Tampane water supply scheme being reconstructed to hold a greater capacity of water. Kurunegala will be one of the beautiful cities in Sri Lanka once the new town development project is successfully completed, the Mayor said. |
