The Children's Desk of Lawyers for Human Rights, and Development (LHRD) has printed stickers against sexual harassment for display in public transport, with the objective of minimising incidents of sexual harassment of children in public transport. The stickers printed in Sinhala, English and Tamil focus on the girl child as the victim of harassment and carry messages to convey that it is a penal offence, that sexual harassment results from perverted minds and does not happen due to any fault of children themselves, that victims should protest and that it is the responsibility of society to support children subjected to harassment without being passive onlookers. LHRD got permission from the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation that would facilitate wider display of these stickers through all public institutions responsible for transport. A ceremony was organised by LHRD in association with the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Civil aviation to facilitate the distribution of these stickers. A. Upali Piyasoma, Minister of State Transport launched these stickers at a ceremony at the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation, Colombo 10, yesterday. LHRD is a non profit, non governmental organisation of lawyers dedicated to the all-round human development of the poor, asserting their right to development and the promotion and protection of human rights. Set up in June 1986, the primary areas of activity of LHRD are the provision of legal aid and assistance, legal awareness to the governmental and the non governmental sector and studies on the law and its impact on people to strengthen the legal process. |
