Maldivians to invest in Lanka's tourism

A investment of over Rs 2 billion is expected for the tourism sector next year following wide-scale interest expressed by a cartel of Maldivian investors in Sri Lanka's leisure industry.

"Several key investors encouraged by the prospects of peace in Sri Lanka have expressed interest in investing in the country's leisure sector and we have already had a series of discussions on potential opportunities," Tourism Minister Gamini Lokuge told the `Daily News' yesterday.

Minister Lokuge said the recent visit by Maldivian Tourism Minister Hassan Sobir has augured well for Sri Lanka and has generated interest in business opportunities here.

"During the Minister's visit extensive talks were held with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe on joint destination promotion activities and other aspects to promote tourism between the two countries. The interest by the Maldivian business community is a sequel to this visit," he said.

According to Minister Lokuge over Rs 400 million has already been invested in the Lanka's leisure sector by Maldivian businesses. However, there is more to come next year.
