A 15-member mission from the Sri Lanka Chamber of Small Industry will leave for Bangalore early next week to find counterparts for joint ventures, establish market for Sri Lankan products and seek avenues for the import of raw material and machinery. President of the Chamber, Aloy R. Jayawardene will lead the delegation.

During this visit the Sri Lanka Chamber of Small Industry will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association, under the auspices of the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bangalore. Roshan Baig, Minister of Small Scale Industries, Government of Karnataka will participate as the chief guest during the MoU signing ceremony.

The MoU is to promote trade and business between Sri Lanka and Bangalore and for the exchange of trade and business information on business opportunities available in the respective countries for the mutual benefit of their members.

The Deputy High Commissioner's Office in Chennai along with the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association, Bangalore have arranged a five-day program discussion between the buyers and sellers for the purchase of raw materials and machinery, export of local products and joint venture programs. Factory visits and discussions with government institutions of small and medium industry are on the cards, Jayawardene said.

The mission has indicated to the respective chambers the areas of their interests for joint ventures, some of which are stainless steel fabrications, glass processing, foundry, steel utensils, industrial and consumer detergents, ladies and gents shoes, surgical dressings and ladies cosmetics. They also seek to import machinery, raw materials and finished goods. The mission will also look into marketing opportunities for exports to India.

Jayawardene led a similar mission to Bombay and Delhi in March this year. "We were able to promote a joint venture to set up a copper smelting foundry project in Sri Lanka, export of steel furniture (Hansteel) and a complete electroplating workshop in Nugegoda, Jayawardene said.

However, Jayawardene regretted that the Department of Commerce in Sri Lanka was unable to meet a financial commitment for the Trade Commissioner based in Chennai to meet the delegation in Bangalore and be present at the signing of the MoU.
