Rs. 4,000 m bridge over Mahaweli at Katugastota

by Kandy South group correspondent

A bridge will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 4,000 million over the Mahaweli Ganga at Katugastota and the road widened to overcome the severe traffic congestion and traffic snarls along the Kandy - Katugastota road to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and to reduce delays on the road, said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake.

He was addressing the traders and the residents of the area who will be effected by this project at a function held at Arena Theatre, Katugastota on November 11th.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that the sum of Rs. 4,000 million required for this project could be obtained through the Asian Development Bank. The present bridge at Katugastota was constructed nearly a century ago and the flow of vehicles and human traffic has increased many fold since then and therefore these changes are desirable for the ultimate benefit for the country and the residents.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that this project will result in the demolition of 19 business premises completely, 14 shops will be partly demolished and 100 houses too will face demolition. Arrangements will be made to compensate this loss to the residents on a realistic value and in a fair and just manner. In evaluating the value for compensation, consultation will be made to the Kandy Mayor, District Secretary, Divisional Secretary and Highways Development Authority and details such as ownership of the land, the age of the building, present condition, and the value of the location and the type of business carried out will be taken into account.

Also present on this occasion were Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake, Deputy Mayor L. B. Aluwihare, Government Agent Kandy L. B. Polgolla, Divisional Secretary, Director (CP) Road Development Authority, President, Traders Association D. Nanayakkara, Secretary H. M. P. Ranasinghe Weeraratne and many others.
