SriLankan Airlines 1st runner-up at Avion Awards 2002

SriLankan Airlines' inflight entertainment guide 'Onboard' secured 'First Runner-Up' rating for the 'Best In-Flight Entertainment Guide 2002' at the 14th annual Avion Awards ceremony organised by the World Airlines' Entertainment Association (WAEA) in Seattle, USA.

Founded in 1979, the WAEA presents the prestigious and much coveted Avion awards for excellence in many categories of inflight entertainment such as radio, video and the print media. As in previous years, a large number of airlines from around the world submitted their inflight entertainment magazines for consideration by a panel of independent and international judges, themselves experts in the spheres of communication and design. They short-listed five: Air Canada, Air France, Cathay Pacific, SriLankan and United Airlines.

Head of Service Delivery at SriLankan Airlines, Walter J. Riggans said that taking into consideration the other finalists have a lot more experience in this field than SriLankan and are many times our size, we can be truly proud of this achievement. Two years ago in 2000, SriLankan Airlines was the second runner-up at the 12th Avion Awards so this is certainly an improvement and we hope next year we will win the top award, he said.

"Since the issue of the guide which was judged was published we have made several changes to the bi-monthly publication. Our printing quality has greatly improved. We have increased the number of CDs reviewed on Audio Channels 40 and 41 from two to six. On October 2002, we introduced 16 video games (for children and adults) on all of our A330 and A340 flights. This includes all short sectors where inflight entertainment was not previously available. Given these latest value additions to the wide range of entertainment we already offer, SriLankan Airlines' inflight entertainment is already ranked highly among international airlines and we're certain that more passengers will choose to fly SriLankan in future," Riggans said.

SriLankan Airlines 'Onboard' in-flight entertainment guide is a slick and colourful 48 page bi-monthly magazine which presents a selection of 18 television channels (including an air-show which traces your flight route as well as forward and downward facing cameras) and 22 radio channels producing together over 110 hours of the finest inflight entertainment from around the world and now also 16 video games.

The concise and easy-on-the-eye program schedules are complemented by colourful photographs and movie reviews, together with entertainment news and several interesting features on stars and celebrities in the international entertainment scene.

'Onboard' is now an integral part of the total entertainment package. It even goes beyond the confines of an inflight entertainment guide and contains handy and practical tips for passengers before the journey, while at the airport, and inflight to ensure maximum comfort and relaxation as well as after arrival at one's destination.

In Business Class, passengers can also choose from 'Ondemand', a catalogue featuring over 30 movies, which contains the film library available to all Business Class passengers. The easy-to-refer-to programme schedule is enhanced by illustrated film reviews in English, Italian, French, German Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin and Arabic.

'Onboard' and 'Ondemand' are published bi-monthly by Agency Fish Ltd, a design company based in London with which SriLankan Airlines works very closely to ensure the 'SriLankan' image but with an exciting international flavour, in every issue.
