Students brainwashed by political party, says J'pura VC

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Vice Chancellor of Jayawardhanapura University, Prof. Senevi Epitawatte said students who enter the University are completely brainwashed by students backing a certain political party. "It was very clear that around 100 very well organised students had carried out this barbarous act," the Vice-Chancellor said.

Students have every right to learn various political ideologies of philosophers, but at the same time should be more responsible in trying them out practically, Prof. Epitawatte said. "A university student should be independent with a good knowledge of the country and should always be humane to his other colleagues," he said.

"This eruption of student violence is a reminder to all parents, students, vice chancellors, policy makers and media, that it's time to revise the whole mechanism".

Parents should be more alert about the activities of their children, apart from their studies, he said. He also requested media institutions to provide the "oxygen" by being more responsible in reporting such incidents.

Prof. Epitawatte has called all lecturers for a two week programme where the crisis in the university will be discussed in detail.
