by Jaffna special correspondent A team of Taiwanese doctors performed cataract operations at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on the invitation of the Rotary Club of Colombo East, Kandy Metropolitan and Jaffna recently. Shu Ti Chiou, Minister of Health of Taiwan led the 15 doctors of whom 12 were specialists. "Ours is a reciprocatory gesture to the people of Jaffna for the donations of cornea to the people of Taiwan", said Minister Chiou in Jaffna. She was speaking to the media at a conference yesterday at the Uthayan auditorium. A cataract eye camp was organised jointly by the Rotary Clubs, Taipei Fu Jung, Colombo East, Kandy Metropolitan and Jaffna. The visiting team will carry out 200 eye operations at the Jaffna Teaching hospital from the 11th till the 15th instant. "We have timed our visit at a time when the people of Jaffna are heaving a sigh of relief after witnessing a long period of ethnic war. Our mission is only a beginning to prop up the peace process through granting sight. If our mission is a success we hope to come again and grant relief and sight to the people of Vanni", the Minister said. "We have brought five million rupees worth of medical apparatus and 200 lenses to replace cataract. The total cost of medical services is about Rs. 2.5 million. "We consider our services as an opportunity to share our friendship with the Rotarians", she said. The Minister was associated with the team leader Kwok Koo Tip, Superintendent Dr. Lin Chung Woung, Assistant District Governor, Dr. Josephine Wong, Kandy Rotary Club President Siva, Colombo East Rotary Club President Rtn. Berne Dol and Jaffna Rotary Club Past President Rtn. E. Saravanabawan. |
