Deadline announced for registering N-E vehicles

The Interior Ministry has informed all vehicle owners in the North-East to register their vehicles before December 7, 2002.

A spokesman for the Ministry told the Daily News that a large number of unregistered vehicles from the North and East, especially from uncleared, LTTE controlled areas come to cleared (government controlled) areas. The majority of these vehicles are motorcycles, three wheelers, cars and lorries.

"These vehicles have caused major problems for the police in enforcing the law as it is difficult to establish the ownership and other information at times of road accidents. There were several instances in the past few months where vehicles stolen from the South have been taken to Jaffna," he said. Some drivers of these unregistered vehicles do not have driving licences either.

North-East vehicle owners can register their vehicles at the Motor Traffic Department through the nearest Divisional Secretariat and obtain a temporary permit from the Grama Niladhari of the area to be used until December 7.

"After December 7, the police will strictly enforce the law and those who do not have driving licences and have not registered their vehicles will be prosecuted," he said.

Secretary to the Interior Ministry M.N. Junaid has advised the Inspector General of Police to inform all DIGs in the North to strictly enforce the law after the deadline.
