Foundation formed to develop and assist children's ward at H'tota

by M.R.M. Niyas, Hambantota special correspondent

On the initiative of the Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Harris Pathirana attached to Hambantota Base Hospital a Children's Ward Development Foundation had been formed to uplift the standard of the Hambantota base hospital children's ward. It will also assist the deserving families whose children are unable to gain access to graded medical facilities owing to lack of funds.

Dr. Pathirana said that the sole intention of the foundation was to help the needy children in the Hambantota district and suburbs.

He said "there are many families who are unable to afford the expenses when their children are admitted to hospital. It is our aim to help them financially and provide assistance to buy milk foods for their malnourished children.

The doctor said the other important area we have identified is to improve the children's ward facilities. There are several shortcomings in the ward, but we can not wait until the Government provides everything. Therefore we thought of getting assistance from donors to fulfil the requirements. So far we have received several praiseworthy donations, he said.

Dr. Pathirana said, that their next aim was to assist the children who were going for cardiac surgery. He said, "we have found children with heart ailments who need urgent surgery and are unable to afford to do so owing to financial difficulties. We have planned to assist the children who need cardiac surgery before they develop complications.

The treasurer of the Hambantota Base Hospital Children's Ward Development Foundation, is Dr. Lalitha Ranjana Dissanayaka and the Secretary is the Chief Pharmacist of the hospital S.R.H. Ambepitiya.

If any person is willing to assist the foundation they could contact the Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Harris Pathirana.
