Hotel attack: suspect identified at parade

by Sarath Malalasekera

Mohamed Rafeek, a suspect remanded in connection with the attack at Trans Asia Hotel on November 3 was identified by a prosecution witness at an identification parade held by Colombo Fort Acting Magistrate Palitha Liyanage as one of the persons at the scene in the hotel.

He was later produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Priyantha Fernando and remanded until November 15.

Six suspects were produced before the identification parade. The 13 prosecution witnesses failed to identify them at the parade.

On an application by Anoja Premaratne, counsel for the suspects, the Judge granted bail for the five suspects. They were ordered to furnish a bond of Rs.10,000 each with a surety and directed to appear in court on November 15.

Granting bail, the Judge ordered the five suspects not to interfere with any of the prosecution witnesses. If they violate the bail conditions, the court would cancel the bail bond and re remand them.

The five suspects granted bail are Nitthikumara Hathwella of Ratnapura, Gamini Alfred of Pita Kotte, R.M. Chularatne of Menikhinna, S. Priyalal Hinduma and Ajith Hemachandra.

At the outset Denzil Gunaratne, Senior Counsel watching the interests of the complainants, told court that the Police had not arrested the main culprits.

ASP J.R. Jayawardena of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) who appeared for the prosecution told court that dossier of the evidence had been forwarded to the Attorney General and was awaiting his instructions.
