Lion recommended for ISO 9001-2000 certification

The Lion Brewery Ceylon Limited (LBCL), a subsidiary of The Ceylon Brewery Limited (CBL), which is certified under ISO 9002: 1994 was recently audited and recommended to be awarded the next level of ISO Quality Certification; also known as 9001-2000, by Lloyds Registry of Quality Assurance. "In fact Lion is the only brewer in Sri Lanka to be certified for their Quality Management System under any national or international standard" said Manager Quality and Product Development of Lion E. Vinayakarajah.

He said that "the focal point of the present certification has been the ensuring of performance improvements through process and system enhancements that directly result in greater customer satisfaction." Lion, which has over 150 years of brewing experience in Sri Lanka, has been constantly rewarded for its excellent products by way of a multitude of international awards, which recognises its brewing excellence.

Billed as one of the most advanced breweries in the South Asian region, the Lion brewery is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and a comprehensive Quality Control regime complete with its own state-of-the-art laboratory.

As a result of its constant superior quality, Lion exports its products to the USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Lebanon, Maldives, Japan and Australia with inquiries from many other countries being handled at present. Vinayakarajah said that at Lion, their Quality Management System covered all divisions of the company, with the standard covering 'commitment of the management', 'competency of people' as well as 'all processes across the value chain'. The new ISO standard of 9001-2000 is based on quality a management principle that encompasses customer focus, leadership, involvement of people, the process approach, the systems approach to management, continual improvement, factual approach to decision making and mutually beneficial supplier relationships.

"This certificate is a reflection of our team work and dedication in ensuring high quality and superior products," said Vinayakarajah who added that Lion's aim in implementing the system was not the mere obtaining of a certificate, but a desire to update its Quality Management System to that which is internationally recognised and on par with international brands.
