Thomians - Colombo Schools hockey champions by Richard Dwight S. Thomas' who in those earlier years enjoyed a reputation for producing some fine hockey players and teams to be in the reckoning for championship honours paled out somewhat in the succeeding years, failing to impress and wane. But in the recent years they have made amends, to progress remarkably and be a potential threat to opposing teams. The senior team proved their supremacy in no uncertain terms, to remain unbeaten and emerge champions in the Colombo schools Hockey tournament in the under 19 age category. On their run up to championship honours they beat Wesley 4-0, Hindu College 6-0 Isipatana 3-0. Progressing to the semi finals they beat Ananda 1-0 and in the finals won against Nalanda 2-0 to win the coveted award. S. Thomas' had the added pleasure of defeating their traditional rivals Royal, for the third consecutive year, to retain the Orville Abeynaike Memorial trophy. The under 17 hockey team too did extremely well, to emerge champions for the second successive year at the Colombo schools hockey tournament held recently. In the semi finals they beat St. Benedicts 1-0 and at the finals they got the better of St. Peters 2-1. They emerged runners-up, at the all island inter-schools hockey tournament, going down only to St. Thomas' Matale 1-0. The teams were coached by Veteran hockey coach, Daniel Edirisinghe, with Dinesh Wickremasinghe as assistant coach. |
