Sports stars shine at World Masters' Games by Richard Dwight Former Sri Lankan sports stars, Lucky (nee Dharmasena) Alagoda, Major General Dr. C. Thurairajah, Dr. Ranjith de Silva and Damika Guneratne, did exceptionally well to bring honour to their country, when they shone to win medals at the recently concluded World Masters' Games (WMG) in Melbourne. There were around 25,000 competitors drawn from 97 countries, participating in the 28 different disciplines. The one time Queen of Sports Lucky Dharmasena now Alagoda after marriage, had the distinction of captaining three Sri Lanka National teams in netball, vollyball and basketball, whilst also representing the country in badminton as an outstanding player. At this WMG 2002, Lucky won a Gold Medal, Silver and yet another Silver in the badminton division I for the womens' singles, womens' doubles and the mixed doubles respectively. The versatile Dr. C. Thurairajah, who excelled in cricket, rugger, tennis and doing well now on the golf course as a golfer, gave a good account of himself at the WMG, to win one of the four golf medals on offer, of the division one golf championships. Ranjith de Silva a former badminton ace showed that he has still that old form and skill, by winning a Silver medal in the badminton singles division one, and two Gold medals for the badminton team events. Damika Guneratne a reputed table tennis player for Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda and an equally fine badminton player, won two Silver medals at the WMG-one for the men's doubles and the other for the mixed doubles, both in the badminton championships. |
