Navy arrests six LTTEers

Naval troops patrolling the sea off Trincomalee on Friday night detected 12 communications sets and 35 claymore mines in a boat along with six suspected LTTE cadres on board, near the Trincomalee harbour.

Initial investigations by the Navy have revealed that this consignment of two-way radios and claymore mines hidden in saucepans was transported from Kumburupiddy to Sampoor on a directive of Uthayan, the second-in-command of the LTTE military leader in Trincomalee. The boat also contained a generator, 12 oil cans and satellite dish.

Investigations have revealed that the boat belonged to the LTTE and that it was transporting the goods to a LTTE point near the Trincomalee port, Defence Minister Tilak Marapana who was in Trincomalee on Saturday told the Daily News.

The six LTTE cadres including one suicide cadre called Kuruba detained by the Navy were handed over the Trincomalee harbour police and remanded till November 15 after they were produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate.
