Cultural centre in Biyagama soon

A cultural centre will be established in Biyagama. Once this centre is opened all those engaged in cultural activities will benefit, said School Education Minister Suranimala Rajapakse.

Culture has no race, caste or religion. Therefore culture must be inspired by national feeling; he said.

Speaking as the chief guest at the Kala Ulela of Sapugas Kanda Maha Vidyalaya last Saturday, he said Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Tamils and Muslims earlier joined together and rendered songs pertaining to any religion. "Earlier there was no distinction on religion, caste or creed. Therefore it is our duty to encourage the future generation to Follow this example," he said.

Rajapakse said culture is necessary for everyone in daily life. "Therefore we must develop our culture and go forward. The Government will do all that is possible to take our culture to a better stage," he said.

 

Saumiyamoorthy Thondaman remembered

The death anniversary of Late CWC leader and Minister Saumiyamoorthy Thondaman was observed at Shri Manickapillaiyar temple, Hatton last Wednesday. Minister of Housing, Estate Infrastructure and CWC Boss Arumugan Thondaman was the Chief Guest at this event.

A special pooja organised by the Board of Trustees of Shri Manickapilliayar temple, was held in the presence of the Minister. He was accompanied by V. Radhakrishnan, Minister of Education for Central Province, V. Suresh, Additional Secretary of Ceylon Workers' Congress, S. Vellayan, CPC Councillor and other executives of the Ceylon Workers' Congress.

A special pooja was conducted at the portrait of late leader S. Thondaman. Following this 15 sewing machines each costing Rs. 15,000/- were distributed to 15 widows from poor families.

 

Appointed Govt. Analyst

K. Sivarajah has been appointed as the Government Analyst from August 15, 2002 and will be the 14th Government Analyst. He has a long and distinguished experience at the Government Analyst's department serving for the last 33 years in food, liquor and narcotics sections. Sivarajah is an old boy of Victoria College, Chulipuram and Jaffna College, Vaddukkodai. He entered the Science Faculty of the Peradeniya campus of the University of Ceylon in 1962 and was part of the very first chemistry special batch at Peradeniya campus. He graduated with a special degree in Chemistry and joined the Government Analyst's Department in 1969 as an Assistant Government Analyst.

In 1976, Sivarajah obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Reading, UK. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon and a Chartered Chemist.

He also serves as a member of sectorial committees for food standards of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.

 

Fined in heroin, ganja case

The Aranayaka Police has stepped up raids in the Aranayaka area in wipe out the menace of kassippu, heroin and other narcotics. Recently, the Police made a detection at Gevilipitiya, where a man identified as G.R. Sujeewa Bandara was found to be possessing 60 mg of heroin and cannabis sativa 1,420 mg.

The Police produced Sujeewa Bandara in court and charged him for possessing heroin and ganja.

The Aranayaka Circuit Magistrate R.M.S.P.K. Ratnayaka fined the accused Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 3,500 respectively on each count.

 

Mobile Ayurvedic dispensary

Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha has decided to establish a mobile free Ayurvedic dispensary and a chain of herbariums in the Pradeshiya Sabha area.

Hector Appuhamy, Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha said a mobile Ayurvedic dispensary will serve the three colonies within the Sabha area.

Herbariums will be established to create awareness among our people that less expensive herbal medicine can be used for many common ailments. We are hoping to provide information to the younger generation to identify rare and important Ayurvedic herbs threatened with extinction.
