Compensation for Maligawatte violence victims

by Rashomi Silva

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed to grant immediate relief to those affected by the recent violence at Maligawatte, Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M. Azwer told the Daily News yesterday.

The Prime Minister has also ordered the Divisional Secretary to assess the damage to pay full compensation to the victims. Azwer, Western Regional Development Minister M.H. Mohamed and Tourism Minister Gamini Lokuge visited the area last afternoon. "Normality has returned to the area," Azwer said.

"We want to assure the affected people that their security is ensured and we appeal to them to get back to their homes. The troops will remain in the area until the situation stabilises." Since the controversial building had been the subject of a court dispute, both sides agreed to abide by the court decision, Azwer said.

The Minister thanked the Inter-Religious Peace Committee led by Ven. Madampe Assaji Thera for its efforts to restore law and order.
