Course on Journalism and Democracy

The Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in collaboration with the Institute of Further Education for Journalists (FOJO) under the aegis of Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) has organised a programme on "Journalism and Democracy" scheduled for November 4 to 15 and December 2 to 13, 2002, an SLFI news release said yesterday.

The programme is for active journalists with experience from the print and electronic media. Joint organiser FOJO is a Swedish institute that has been dealing with mid career training of journalists since 1972.

The programme consists of lectures, discussions and practical work. It will cover among other topics, the following issues; the role of journalism in a democracy, ideology and ethics of journalism, foreign aid- democratic or colonial ?, war correspondent, peace journalism or both ?, news evolution and journalistic working methods, e.g. interviewing techniques and Internet as a journalistic tool, people oriented journalism versus Parliament reporting.
