Water Supply schemes for Hambantota district

by Tissamaharama special correspondent

The largest water supply scheme in Hambantota district is Ambalantota-Hambantota water supply scheme which provides about 9,000 millilitres of water per day for a population of about 50,000 at present.

Hambantota UC area gets water for about ten to twelve hours per day. The ends of distribution pipe lines which go out of UC areas get only about four hours per day in normal days. During droughts supply within UC areas get further reduced by about two hours and the distribution ends get only two hours every other day or other two days. As such the following proposals have been proposed for the improvement of water supply.

When Hambantota district is considered, proposals to improve water supply in Beliatta, Tissamaharama, Ridiyagama, Muruthawela, Ambalantota and Hambantota areas have already either been implemented or prepared.

Beliatta water supply scheme provides water to the town and surrounding areas. A new treatment plant was introduced to the existing water supply scheme in 2001. There is a big demand for water for the surrounding areas of the existing distribution system. Investigations for new bore holes, locations to tap ground water have already been done.

Tissamaharama water supply scheme provides drinking water to Dembarawewa and Tissamaharama areas. Water source is the Kirindi Oya. The capacity of the scheme is 1,200 M a day to serve a population of about 13,000 and the supply is limited to fifteen hours a day due to shortage of water.

Improvements will be effected to this water supply scheme at a cost of Rs. 65 million.

Ridiyagama water supply scheme mainly provides water to the beggar rehabilitation centre at Ridiyagama. The proposed augmentation will provide water to people living in the Ridiyagama area. The capacity of the proposed scheme is 800 M a day for Muruthawela water supply scheme. The capacity of the proposed scheme is 5,000 M a day to serve a population of about 16,000.

The construction of Weeraketiya ground reservoir distribution system at Muruthawela, Weeraketiya and Walasmulla has already been completed. Construction of treatment plant is underway.
