Colombo University: Police on guard to prevent more clashes

Police stood guard outside the Colombo University yesterday to prevent a possible clash after reports that more students from other universities were coming to help their counterparts who got beaten up on Wednesday, Cinnamon Gardens police said.

Over 20 students were injured in the clash on Thursday which was triggered around 4.00 pm between rival student groups contesting for the student union election scheduled on Friday.

However, the Arts Faculty Dean Prof.Y. Rasanayagam said there were no 'law-breaking' incidents in the university yesterday. As a precautionary measure they have taken action to close the Arts Faculty only for yesterday. "This decision was taken to defuse tension among student factions and it will be open for academic activities on Tuesday (the next working day) as usual," she said.

The election has been postponed indefinitely.
