Two leading ex-ministers detained KATHMANDU, Thursday (AFP) Two top ministers from the government ousted by Nepal's king earlier this month were detained after being accused of corruption, sources in their party said. Khum Bahadur Khadka and Jaya Prakash Gupta, home minister and communications minister respectively under sacked premier Sher Bahadur Deuba, were both taken in by police. "They have been placed under police custody for further investigation on charges of corruption," said a source in Deuba's party. Nepal's Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority has grilled both men in recent days over alleged corruption. Khadka is accused of awarding construction contracts to private companies without calling public tenders in accordance with the law. Gupta is alleged to have received kickbacks during the import of cellular phones into the kingdom. King Gyanendra on October 4 dismissed the government, calling premier Deuba "incompetent." He assumed power for a week before appointing a government headed by a staunch monarchist, Lokendra Bahadur Chand. |
