213,000 IDPs return home by Ranga Jayasuriya Two hundred and thirteen thousand Internally Displaced People (IDP) have been relocated since January, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). "Approximately 213,000 IDPs or 64,247 internally displaced families have returned or have been moving home from January to the end of September," UNHCR spokeswoman Branda Barrett told the Daily News. One hundred and twenty three thousand IDPs have returned to Jaffna followed by 33,000 to Killinochchi, 29,000 to Mullaitivu and 9,000 to Mannar according to the estimates of the Government Agents, Barrett said. She said a large number of these movements is within the same district. She however said the UNHCR was not encouraging large scale organised return since "the climate is not yet conducive and sustainable", pointing to "safety and poor infrastructure". The total of IDPs in Sri Lanka before the Ceasefire Agreement was estimated at 800,000 plus 85,000 refugees in Tamil Nadu. |
