by Florence Wickramage The Environmental Foundation Limited (EFL) is inviting interested groups or individuals for submissions and reading of papers and participation at the national symposium on Environmental Justice and Equity to be held shortly. The EFL launched its four year programme on Environmental Justice and Equity in April this year with the support of the Ford Foundation's regional office in India. Explaining the objectives of the programme EFL's Ravi Algama said that Environmental Justice means the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, colour, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies. Algama further said that it has been noted that the development of infrastructure or environmental degradation has been unevenly distributed among the social classes and the disadvantaged groups have always been the poor and powerless communities in the society. The programme therefore seeks to ensure that no group of people, including a racial, ethnic or a socio-economic group should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from industrial, municipal and commercial operations or the execution of policies. The programme will also include educational programmes, legal and scientific aid, advocacy campaigns, monitoring of the compliance of environmental laws and the empowerment of the disadvantaged groups and promote sustainable development. |
