Nominations called for TOYP awards 2002

The Junior Chamber Sri Lanka (JCSL) has called for nominations for the selection of persons eligible for the presentation of the Ten Most Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) awards 2002.

The TOYP awards ceremony organised by JCSL will be held at the BMICH, Colombo on December 18 under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya.

A JCSL press release said nominations will be accepted in 10 categories. They are business, economic and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment, legal and/or public administration, academic leadership and/or accomplishment, cultural achievement, moral and/or environmental leadership, contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights, humanitarian and/or voluntary service, scientific and/or technological development, medical innovation, and personal improvement and/or accomplishment.

Junior Chamber Sri Lanka holds the franchise to conduct 'The Outstanding Young Persons Awards Programme which is the annual PR project of the JCSL's calendar of events.

The TOYP programme serves to recognise 10 outstanding individuals whose personal and professional achievements in a chosen field are exemplary, outstanding and nationally beneficial. TOYP awards programme highlights and confers national recognition to these achievements and contributions to serve as an example and an incentive to youth to channel their energies in the right direction and create a positive change in the society.

The TOYP was originally conceived and developed by Durwood Howes, President of the United States Junior Chamber in 1930. This programme highlighted 12 outstanding young leaders each year.

In 1933, this programme was officially adopted by the US Jaycees. Since 1952 many other national organisations have established their own 'Outstanding Young Persons Programme' in their countries.

To be selected as TOYP honouree is an arduous process. Infomercials are published in the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon (ANCL) newspapers for four weeks and those interested in applying may call for the official nomination forms. Nomination forms could be submitted in any of the three languages.

In all cases guidelines for selections are based on how each person's achievements benefited the community, his profession or the world and how such achievements have inspired others and his record of adherence to the principles embodied in the Jaycee Creed, Closing date for Nominations is November 6, 2002.

The release said nomination forms received are scrutinised by judges appointed for this purpose. The panel will consist of up to five prominent personalities. The judging is taken place in the presence of auditors. The winners of this year's programme will be recognised at the awards ceremony on December 18, at the BMICH.

Past winners of this awards include Ministers Ravi Karunayake and Rauf Hakeem, Tilan Wijesinghe, Lakshman R. Watawala, Romesh de Silva, Ajitha Kadirgamer, Ranjan Madugalle, Arjuna Ranatunga, Prof, Dayantha Wijesekera and Sanath Jayasuriya world-renowned artist Senaka Senanayake is the only Sri Lankan to win this prestigious award internationally.

Wild Drift, a company providing management training in the wilderness is the sponsor for this event. ANCL as the media sponsor will carry infomercials in the Daily News on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dinamina on Mondays and Saturdays, Thinkaran on Wednesdays and Fridays and Sunday Observer and Silumina on Sundays. Eye Channel of Rupavahini Corporation is the electronic media sponsor this year.
