by L. S. Egodawita, Kandy Group Correspondent The Kandy Municipal Council will take legal action against the Ministry of Tourism. This is for the recovery of Rs. 1.7 million due from the Ministry on account of the recently concluded Kandy Esala Pageant. Kandy's, Mayor Kesara Senanayake said during the Esala Festival the Municipal Council rented out the pavements along several streets near the Queen's Hotel to provide seating accommodation for local and foreign tourists viewing the pageant. The Tourism Ministry had promised to compensate the loss of revenue to the Municipal Council for this by paying Rs. 1.7 million. Minister of Tourism, Gamini Lokuge, Kandy Mayor Kesara Senanayake, Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne, the Secretary the Ministry of Tourism and the Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourist Board participated in the meeting with several other officials where the decision was made to rent the pavements without calling for tenders, as requested by the Ministry, which agreed to pay Rs. 1.7 million. The Mayor opted to accept the request after getting the consent of all councillors. The rent was fixed at Rs. 1.7m to which both parties agreed. But this payment has not been made in spite of repeated reminders now for more than 3 months. Therefore the Council has decided to sue the Secretary of the Ministry in order to get the money from the Ministry. |
