Top Japanese diplomat to visit Lanka

One of Japan's foremost diplomats and re-known peace-builder Yashushi Akashi will visit Sri Lanka in the first week of November for talks with key Sri Lanka leaders, the Embassy of Japan announced last night.

The embassy said that in response to an invitation from the government Akashi would spend five days in Sri Lanka. It will include a tour to the North and East.

He is due to meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronne Fernando, Constitutional Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, Defence Minister Tilak Marapana, SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem, Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapakse, and TNA leaders. He will also meet the LTTE's political Wing leader S. P. Tamilchelvam. Talks will also be held with the head of the Peace Secretariat Bernard Goonethilaka and the SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde, UN officials and civil society actors.

Akashi is a former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs and served as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the former Yugoslavia and Cambodia.
