Two dead, eight hurt in Australia university shooting

A gunman shot and killed two people and wounded eight others at a Melbourne university campus on Monday before police captured him, police said.

Police said the gunman had been taken to a local police station, but they provided no further details about his motives or the weapon used.

The shooting occured on the sixth floor of a building housing the arts and humanities faculty of Monash University's Clayton campus in outer Melbourne.

"We have been informed that there are two patients deceased," said a spokeswoman for the local ambulance service.

Police confirmed the two deaths and said eight people had been hurt.

Health workers said one man was in a serious condition with stomach wounds. The condition of the other victims was not immediately known.

The incident occured as Australia continued to cope with the aftermath of an October 12 bombing attack in Bali that is believed to have killed more than 90 Australians.

"It's shocking that it could happen this close," said a woman working at Monash near where the shooting occured.
