Petes enter semis in spectacular win over Ananda

by Chris Dhambarage

League champions St. Peter's College made a spectacular entry into the semifinals of the Premier Champions Trophy inter school under 19 rugby tournament by defeating Ananda College by a massive margin of 67 points to nil at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The Peterites who led 39 nil at half time collected their points from seven goals, three tries and one penalty. Mohamed Rinaz and Dinuka Jayasinghe planted three tries each as the Peterite three quarters warmed up for their semifinal clash schedule for Sunday. Both produced some cracking moves with their speed and power while setting the stage for a convincing victory. Mohamed Rinaz continued from where he left from the league and knock out championship with three early tries that gave them the confidence.

Fly half Dinuka Jayasighe also joined in the scoring and was responsible for several moves which were initiated from the base. He gave his three quarters plenty of good ball while setting the line in motion quite regularly. The back division responded magnificently with Philip Aesingharachchi (2) and Dilanka Wijesekera (2) too taking full advantage of the opportunities. The last quarterfinal of the under 19 tournament between Mahanama MV and Science College will be played today.

Comfortable win for Army

In the inter club knock out tournament third quarterfinal Army SC beat Air Force SC 53 nil after leading 22 nil at half time. The winners collected their points from five goals, three tries and one penalty. Police SC will take on Navy SC in the last quarterfinal match today.

Earlier Isipatana and Sri Rahula MV Kandy entered the semifinals of the under 13 inter school ten a side tournament while recording convincing victories over Zahira College and Vidyartha College respectively at the Sugathadasa Stadium today. The Isipatana juniors gave a fine lesson to the Zahirians as they won the quarterfinal fixture 63 nil one of the biggest victory margins recorded so far in the tournament. Isipatana who led 28 nil at half time ran circles around the Zahira defence while scoring tries at regular intervals.

Sri Rahula MV too maintained their impressive record in the tournament by outplaying the more fancied Vidyartha outfit 26 nil. This was a good morale boosting win for Sri Rahula MV who will meet either Wesley College or St. John's College Nugegoda in the semifinals. Isipatana will take on either Dharmaraja College Kandy or Science College in their semifinal.

Meanwhile Wesley College booked a semifinal place in the under 15 inter school 12 a side tournament by defeating S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia 24 nil. The Wesleyites who led 14 nil at half time planted four tries out of which two were converted. Their opponents in the semifinal will be either Mahanama MV or St. Sylvester's College Kandy. The other semifinal will be between Thurstan and Royal schedule for next Saturday.

In the under 17 inter school 15 a side tournament Prince of Wales College Moratuwa had the better of St. Joseph's College by 29 points to 7. The Cambrians put up a tremendous performance despite the odds against them and eventually sealed the game quite convincingly. The tournament is organised and conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union and the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association.
