Japan appoints special envoy on N-E development Yasushi Akashi, the special representative of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on North East development assistance in Sri Lanka, will call on Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando next week. Akashi was appointed by the Japanese Government last week at the request of Foreign Minister Fernando to coordinate the Japanese development assistance mainly focusing North and East. Akashi, 71, has held a number of UN posts, including Undersecretary General for Public Information, Disarmament Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, UN representative in Cambodia and Special Envoy to former Yugoslavia. He is due to call on several government Ministers as well. |
