Puttalam MPs to appear before special committee in Geneva

by Puttalam group correspondent

Consequent to the findings of the team of investigators headed by Mark Hajmer, President, Special Committee on Human Rights Geneva, who visited Sri Lanka during the early part of the year 2002 and stayed for three days in the Anamaduwa electorate conducting investigations, Lee Welingarten, Secretary to the Geneva Special Committee has notified both parties - Palitha Rangebandara and D.M. Dassanayake, Puttalam District Members of Parliament - to appear before the Special Committee in Geneva on October 21, 22 and 23, 2002, for further inquiries.

Palitha Rangebandara had complained to the International Youth Rehabilitation Organisation which also deals with Human Rights violations around the Globe, against instances of pre-election mass violence that were set in motion in the Anamaduwa electorate and this organisation, in turn, has filed formal complaints before this Special Committee on Human Rights, Geneva, who instituted these investigations, revealed W.A.S.P. Weerasinghe, Executive Director, Human Rights Special Committee Sri Lanka Office.

Accordingly both Palitha Rangebandara and D.M. Dassanayake are expected to leave for Geneva on October 19th.
