by D. Oliver Silva A full fledged Bhikkhu Education Centre is to be set up at Pallekelle, Kandy as a joint Thai-Sri Lanka venture shortly. Construction work on the project known as the Thai-Sri Lanka Friendship Buddhist Education Centre will commence with the laying of foundation stones on November 16 at 2.30 p.m. by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and members of a visiting Thai Royal delegation said Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Neranjan Wijeyaratne. The Mahanayake theras of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters and several Ministers and Parliamentarians will also grace the occasion. The Diyawadana Nilame said the Rs. 150 million project partly funded by the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Thai Buddhist public will consist of all modern facilities including an auditorium with a seating capacity for 1,000 bhikkhus, a fully equipped library and a computer network. Mr. Wijeyaratne said the centre is built to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Siyam Maha Nikaya: The State Engineering Corporation will oversee the construction work. The Diyawadana Nilame said a Thai buddhist delegation led by Thai Ambassador Jerm Tiviyanond visited Pallekelle accompanied by him and inspected the proposed site on Sunday, October 20. |
