Lankan products worth over Rs. 40 m on display at Osaka exhibition By Shirajiv Sirimane Over Rs. 40 million worth of Sri Lankan products will be on display at the 'G-Boc exhibition which will be held from today, October 22 to 24 in Osaka, Japan. Around six Sri Lankan entrepreneurs will participate in this event organised by the Osaka Chamber of Commerce. According to Chairman FILA Group of Companies Colombo, Dr. M.G.M. Rizvie who would be exhibiting gems and jewellery at the exhibition, most of the local companies would be exhibiting gems and traditional Sri Lankan food items. "The total value of gems the Sri Lankan companies would be exhibiting is around Rs. 30 million." He said that though there are low cost gems exhibited at this exhibition from countries such as Thailand and Hong Kong there would be a greater demand for the original Sri Lankan gems and stones. "Most of the gems exhibited from these Far Eastern countries are artificially heated to project a star but they do not last for a long time. This is why these gems are sold at a lower rate than those of Sri Lanka." He said that the Japanese have now realised the importance of traditional Sri Lankan herbal products and foodstuff such as chutney and items made out of curry leaves are in great demand. He also said that the demand for local tea has never declined and this exhibition will help some of the Sri Lankan exhibitors to find partners to exhibit their products. He said that some comments made by the former President J.R. Jayewardene at an United Nation Assembly favouring Japan 50 years ago is still being highly appreciated and this is an advantage for the Sri Lankan entrepreneurs hoping to start business with Japan. "This year also marks the 50th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries." |
