Bangladesh deploys army to combat crime DHAKA, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Bangladesh has deployed troops across the country to help police rein in runaway crime, officials said and Thursday. "Army soldiers were sent out of the barracks in early hours of Thursday following a decision by the government," an army spokesman told Reuters. "They, alongside police, will crack down on criminals and raid suspected hideouts to recover illegal arms," he said. Witnesses said the troops had taken position at key points in the capital, Dhaka, and port city of Chittagong, and will gradually spread over the whole country. Law and order has sharply deteriorated in Bangladesh during the past year despite promises by Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to beat crime. Police say around 10 people were killed every day by crime syndicates or gangs linked to politicians. |
