Sri Lankan cricketers to launch school poster campaign

The Maharagama Cancer Hospital, Sri Lanka's only and fully fledged national cancer hospital is sadly inadequate in many necessities. The lack of modern equipment, adequate accommodation facilities and the best machines, coupled with the high number of cancer patients far outweighed its ability to diagnose and treat cancer victims on time.

Therefore many die of cancers that are treatable and curable in other countries. So as much as one in 10 Sri Lankan death is caused by cancer.

Sri Lanka cricket team will launch a school poster campaign on 18 October, 2002 at the Continental Hotel.

All members of Sri Lanka cricket team will participate at this function and Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Minister of Education, Human Resource Development and Cultural Affairs will be the chief guest.

The Sri Lanka Cricketers' Association and Lions Club of Colombo Somerset are sponsoring this project and the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka has already provided the land while the cricketers are helping to raise funds for the building's construction. Once complete it will be handed over to the Health Ministry.

The entire project will cost an estimated 750 million rupees. That's why the Sri Lanka cricketers are appealing for your help. They cannot do this alone.

The 750 bed Hope Hospital is to be equipped with the latest facilities and geared to cater to patients from every section of society. A committee consisting of doctors, consultants and ministry officials will monitor the hospital ensuring that standards are maintained.

In the first phase the Hope Hospital will have a 540 bed general ward along with an iodine ward and space for two radiotherapy machines. In the second phase there will be modern diagnostic facilities, treatment and ancillary facilities. The third phase will include a further 300 beds.

The Sri Lanka cricket team appeals to the public to give as much as they can. Send your donations to the account number 040750, Seylan Bank, Sri Lanka. If you need any information call 672820.

"We are in this with our hearts", says Sanath Jayasuriya, captain of the Sri Lanka cricket team. We want everybody to join us to give Hope to Sri Lanka".
